Torrance County Urges Governor to Begin Opening Businesses by May 1st Hard-hit Rural Communities are Poised to Safely Reopen

ESTANCIA, NM – Today, the Torrance County Commission approved a letter to Governor Lujan-Grisham urging her to begin opening small businesses in rural communities hardest hit by the COVID-19 shutdown orders.

“We believe that a careful reopening of businesses in our rural communities can be achieved without increasing the risk of further infection”, said the Commission in its letter; which continued “we believe May 1st should be the beginning of the path to reopening businesses, and would suggest that we should start in counties where COVID-19 spread has been minimal”.

“Our citizens have been extremely careful during this crisis and there has been no evidence of community spread”, said Commissioner McCall. He continued “I believe that with proper precautions, our small businesses can begin to safely reopen. While two more weeks could mean the end of many ‘mom and pops’ in our county.”
